World Athletics has chosen Athens as the preferred city to launch a distinct marathon world championship in 2030, separate from the World Athletics Championships.
A new calendar from 2031
The marathon will remain on the programme for the 2027 and 2029 World Championships. From 2031, the new competition is set to become annual, with men’s and women’s races alternating.
The detailed format and partnerships still need to be confirmed. The announcement provides a roadmap, not yet a full set of rules.
