Danielle MacGill wins The District Backyard Ultra in Cumbria by finishing with 33 yards. Darren is awarded the assist after completing 32 yards, a condition presented as decisive in order for Danielle to go all the way to the final yard required. The organiser Heart & Soul Racing records 221.1 km for Danielle and 214.4 km for Darren.
To reach the status of the last runner left in contention, Danielle must complete the required final yard alone. The report says the race ends when she completes this last yard in solitude, making her the final remaining person. The result is set within a format where the assist is designed to accompany the closest runner.
The race gets under way on Saturday 3 October at Into the Woods, in Cumbria, with 84 runners taking the start. From yard 30 onwards, the scenario tightens: Danielle and Darren are then the only ones still moving forward into the next stage of the course. The story highlights a progression that quickly reduces the number of active participants.
The District Backyard Ultra uses the standard backyard ultra distance: 6.706 km (4.167 miles) per yard. The concept requires starting a loop every hour and finishing it before the next start in order to stay in the running. The format features a single winner, who must also complete one final yard solo to close things out.
The course, described by Heart & Soul Racing, is a looping, undulating trail that is “very runnable”, with Blencathra and areas of the Lake District visible to the west, as well as the Pennine Hills to the east. The route is designed to offer mountain scenery without the huge climbs associated with many Lake District races. The event is billed as self-supported, with an aid station providing water and basic equipment.
On organisation and the basics, runners are assigned a 3 m x 3 m space to set up their camp. They are asked to bring shelter, lighting, warm clothing and loading equipment. The article also links this result to a previous assist: Danielle had already earned the assist at Heart & Soul Racing’s April LSD BYU event after 29 yards, and her haul at The District adds four yards to reach 33.
